It’s movie night with the Joint! You’ve got your TV all set up, popcorn popped, and you’re struggling to pick something to watch… Does that sound familiar? If so you’re not the only one. For many stoners out there, the flick of a lighter and watching a good flick are two things that just go hand in hand. Today on The Joint blog, we’ve scoured our movie collection, to take a look at our Top 5 Favorite stoner movies.

#5.) Dazed And Confused

Coming in at number five on our list is a film that’s pure 90s gold, albeit set in the 70s. Dazed And Confused is the classic stoner flick. It follows various groups of small-town high school teens in the summer of 1976 doing all the things you’d expect them to: Blazing in cars, listening to classic rock, and picking on kids younger than them. There’s no shortage of references and throwbacks in this movie, It’s basically like you’ve been transported to the mid-70s and you’re in the back seat hanging out with your drifter pals. The cast of this movie is a good group to spend an hour and forty-seven minutes with, because a lot of the names in this movie would later go on to be megastars, such as Matthew McConaughey and Ben Affleck just to name a few. Haven’t seen this flick? It’d be a lot cooler if you diiiid.

#4.) Pineapple Express

Coming in at number four is 2008’s Pineapple Express. The movie follows Dale (Seth Rogen) and his dealer Saul (James Franco) as they attempt to dodge hitmen and corrupt cops.  Also, Seth Rogan and James Franco unintentionally witness a murder and leave a roach at the scene. Yeah, you read that correctly, That’s the plot... To me, This movie is just peak Seth Rogen, It’s anything goes, out there and hilarious. If you’re a fan of movies that will have you both laughing and glued to the TV, then this one is for you. You’ll be spending the 112-minute runtime just trying to figure out the sheer craziness of it all. It’s got good music, car chases, guns, and a whole lot of moments that will have you asking “what did I just watch?!” Do yourself a favor and check this one out.

#3.) Cheech And Chong Present: “Up In Smoke”

You already knew that at least one of the Cheech and Chong films was going to pop up on this list. There’s no question we’re going to go with the quintessential entry in the series. While this movie isn’t going to wow you with some over the top plot and special effects, It’s never a bad idea to check out a film that essentially invented the entire stoner movie genre. Released in 1978, this film follows an unemployed drummer named Anthony Stoner (Tommy Chong). Anthony ditches his strict parents for dreams of hitting the road to play drums in a  band. He eventually links up with the second half of the legendary comedy duo, Pedro de Pacas (Cheech Marin). Buckle up and take a front seat in the van as you join them on their adventure of trying to find the perfect stash. There are arrests, cheesy acting, and a soundtrack that you might dig after a few puffs. Nearly 40 years later, people are still talking about this one, so pay your respects to stoner film history, and check this one out.

#2.) Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back

Coming in at number two is one of the most classic films from Kevin Smith. Basically, the premise of this movie is that the main characters Jay and Silent Bob (played by Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes respectively) end up discovering that a movie called “Bluntman and Chronic” is being made based on their likenesses. When they don’t end up getting a paycheque for the film, they decide to make sure it goes off the rails at all costs. If you’re into off-color humor and smoking weed this is definitely a movie that you’re going to want to check out. Plus, If you’re still not convinced this movie has an awesome cast including Will Ferrell, Jason Lee, Chris Rock, and even Ben Affleck. Check it out.

#1.) Friday

Closing out our list is a 1995 classic starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker. This movie features just the right amount of action, with a hilariously written script filled with lines that are still quoted to this day.  The plot follows Craig, who just got fired from his job for stealing cardboard boxes (odd reason to get fired)... To make matters worse, his rent is due, he hates his overbearing girlfriend, Joi (Paula Jai Parker), and his best friend, Smokey (Chris Tucker), owes the local drug dealer money for smoking his weed. That’s just part of the plot. If you’re looking for a wild ride of a movie with a good mix of humor and action, with a solid hip hop soundtrack, then this is the movie for you.
