Beginners Guide To Weed

The Joint CannabisMay 11, '22

Back in the day, you couldn’t afford to be picky about the cannabis you bought; you took what you could get. But now that cannabis is widely available, you have no shortage of options to choose from. Store shelves are fully stocked with indicas, sativas, and everything in between.

You’re left with the opposite problem: It feels like there are too many types of weed to choose from. If you’re new to cannabis culture, you might be wondering how to distinguish top-tier weed from bud that’s seen better days.

There’s a lot more to good weed than its THC content. In this blog, we’re going to cover all the qualities you should look for when choosing your cannabis:

At a Glance

What can you learn just by looking at the cannabis bud? You’d be surprised. Right off the bat, you’ll want to pay attention to the following:

  • The colour. When you picture cannabis, you probably envision bright green bud. But weed comes in all kinds of colours, including purple, orange, and yellow. Colour doesn’t necessarily mean that your cannabis is more potent, but it’s a good sign that it’s fresh and well-grown. Try to avoid cannabis that’s brown or beige, which may indicate that it’s past its due date.
  • The trim. If you buy bud that’s full of leaves, seeds, and stems, it’s an indicator that it wasn’t trimmed very carefully.
  • The trichomes. Bring the bud close to your eye. Can you see anything that looks like frost or sugar on the cannabis? You’re looking at the trichomes, which are a great indicator of potent, high-quality weed. These tiny crystals are packed with THC and other cannabinoids.

  • That Unmistakable Odour

While weed has a strong smell, different strains have all sorts of subtle notes and terpene profiles. Various strains of cannabis give off all kinds of aromas.

Break off a piece of cannabis and take a deep whiff. What do you notice? Is it sour? Sweet? Earthy? Or spicy? When cannabis has a diverse aromatic profile, it typically means you have some quality bud on your hands.

    Texture

Break off a bud from your cannabis, and rub it between your fingers. Does it feel sticky and soft? Or dry and crumbly? Sticky and resinous weed indicates potency and freshness. If your cannabis feels as dry as the desert, it’s probably past its prime.

    Taste & Smoke

This might be the best part of testing cannabis; it’s time to try it out. You can ingest your cannabis however you prefer, whether that’s smoking it, vaping it, or eating it. Your goal is to pay close attention to its flavour profile. The more nuanced the flavour profile is, the better.

With edibles, the other ingredients may interfere with the true taste of your cannabis. But when you’re smoking or vaping weed, pay attention to its unique flavour. You can ask yourself things like:

  • Does it taste smooth and flavourful?
  • Does it burn evenly?
  • Does the flavour linger in my mouth?
  • A smooth taste and full-bodied flavour are both signs that you’ve picked an excellent brand of cannabis.
