Cannabis-Friendly Campsites In Saskatchewan

The Joint CannabisJul 28, '23

Camping is pure bliss. Imagine—a roaring campfire, some good friends, music playing, the sun beaming down, a joint in your hand.

That’s the good life.

We’ve got great news if that sounds like a wonderful way to spend a long weekend: You can consume cannabis—whether you smoke it, eat it, or vape it—at various campsites in Saskatchewan.

In this article, we’re going to explore where and when you’re allowed to use cannabis on Saskatchewan campsites, as well as which restrictions and penalties may apply. We’ll also give you some recommendations for campsites we think you’ll love—and that are 420-friendly.

What's Allowed

In Saskatchewan, there’s a blanket ban on using cannabis in public places—this applies to both provincial parks and federal parks.

Here’s the good news—your campsite isn’t considered to be a public place. As long as you’re consuming cannabis on your own campsite—whether it’s on Parks Canada campsites or a provincial campsite—you’re good to go.

We want you to feel comfortable with the information we present you on our website, so here are a few links for you to read if you want to confirm the information we’re presenting here. Cannabis laws vary significantly from province to province, after all. Here are a few sources:

Restrictions

You can’t consume cannabis anywhere but your campsite—that applies whether you’re at a national park or one of Saskatchewan’s many provincial parks. That means no smoking cannabis on beaches, trails, playgrounds, public areas, or anywhere other than on private campsites.

In Saskatchewan, you can’t even smoke weed while backcountry camping—you’re only allowed to consume cannabis on a provincial campsite you’ve rented.

Note that the provincial government has the authority to adjust cannabis laws and how they’re applied at their discretion. Until this year, for example, it was illegal to smoke cannabis in a provincial park on May long weekend—even if you were on a private campsite.

Penalties

There are a number of penalties that may be relevant to cannabis consumption in Saskatchewan campgrounds. The two most relevant are:

  • Consumption of cannabis in a public place or any place other than a private place: A $200 fine
  • Possessing or consuming cannabis in a campground when a cannabis prohibition is in effect: A $200 fine

Considering you can buy more than an ounce for the price of a fine—and that contravening regulations is illegal—stick to the rules. Limit cannabis consumption to your private campsite.

Cannabis-Friendly Campsites

Parks Canada permits cannabis consumption in all of Saskatchewan’s national parks—as long as you only consume it on your private campsite. In the same vein, the Government of Saskatchewan permits consumption in provincial parks. Here are two of our favourite cannabis-friendly Parks Canada campgrounds in Saskatchewan:

Prince Albert National Park

Prince Albert National Park is a beautiful space where the Prairies meet the boreal forest. Gorgeous hiking trails, breathtaking lakes, grasslands and woodlands are yours to explore. Enjoy a couple of puffs at your campsite and go take a hike—you’ll be glad you did.

Grasslands National Park

Bison, prairie dogs, and sweeping grasslands along plains and hills—few places say “Saskatchewan” better than the Grasslands National Park. With a name like “Grasslands”, we wouldn’t blame you for lighting up a joint before enjoying one of its many hiking trails—or before trying to catch the Northern Lights in one of Canada’s largest and most well-kept, dark-sky preserves.
